Breakthrough in diagnosis chronic liver fibrosis

From various tests at UZ Brussel with 205 test subjects who suffer from chronic liver diseases, PhD researcher Joeri Lambrecht (who is the winner of our VUB PhD Cup 2019) and Prof. dr. Leo van Grunsven (of the Liver Cell Biology research group) confirmed that patients with liver fibrosis had higher values of the so-called Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor beta (PDGFRβ) in their blood than participants without liver failure.

They succeeded in identifying different markers in the blood that makes it possible to detect fibrosis through a classical blood test by a doctor. This discovery is an important step in the fight against liver diseases.

In 2018 the VUB submitted a patent application for this research and is still looking for commercial partners to valorize it.
