*The masterclass with dr. Anya Topolski*
In this masterclass dr. Anya Topolski briefly introduces the central tenets of her current research project. As part of this project, dr. Topolski has written about the ‘race-religion constellation’ which refers to a historical “practice of classifying people into races according to categories we now associate with the term religion” (Topolski, 2018, p.58). Consequently it is pivotal to develop a framework that further excavate the intersections between the ‘religion line’ and ‘color line’.

Following this brief introduction dr. Topolski will give input and feedback on the work of PhD researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, such as sociology, political sciences, geography, philosophy, communication studies and gender and queer studies. All PhD students who work with concepts and theories of race, religion, secularism and intersectionality are invited to participate in this masterclass.

Participants are required to read two selected articles written by dr. Anya Topolski so as to familiarize themselves with her work. They are also asked to prepare a ten minute presentation of their work as well as questions or points for discussion. It is strongly recommended but not obligatory for the participants to send in a short description of their research as well as one question regarding the aspects of their work they struggle with the most (approximately 300 words). This should be submitted one week in advance, so as to allow dr. Topolski time to reflect on the questions asked. PhD researchers participating in the masterclass are entitled to 1 credit in their Doctoral training programme.

Participants are also recommended to attend the public event with dr. Anya Topolski amongst the speakers in the evening from 6-8 pm at the Promotiezaal (VUB campus Etterbeek).

Following the masterclass an informal dinner will be organized with dr. Topolski, the organizers as well as interested participants of the masterclass.

The masterclass fits into a broader event co-organized by VUB-partners RHEA, BIRMM and EDGE to highlight the International Day against Racism. These organizations have committed themselves to organize a yearly activity around this international day starting with 2020.
