Find out more about the Student Council.

    Student Council

The Student Council defends the interests of students and advises on all things of importance to students. In total there are 20 students in the Student Council. Two students are elected per faculty and another four university wide.

Via indirect elections, student representatives will be selected out of those 20 members for all important councils of the VUB: the University council, Board of Directors, Research Council, Education Council, …

    Election procedure

After the nomination period, the electoral commission decides whether all candidates are admissible. All accepted candidates will be announced to the student community. After a short appeal period the definitive candidates are announced.

The election period lasts at least 3 weeks, but can be extended by the electoral commission. For valid elections a participation quorum of 25% is needed.

More detailed information is available in the ‘General regulations of the Student Council and the Council for Student Services’.

    Faculty council

The Faculty councils determine the general policy of the faculty and supervise the faculty board and bureau. The activities of the Faculty council tally with the Faculty’s authority, as stipulated in the institutional charter.

After the candidacy period the Student Council checks whether there are more candidates than mandates. If there are more candidates than mandates, the dean is requested to offer a proposition. The dean will take objective data into account (e.g. programme and acquired credits) to make an informed decision. The Student Council takes account of the dean’s motivated advice when appointing the representatives.

If the number of candidates is equal to the number of mandates, the Student Council appoints all candidates. Candidates that are not appointed as student representatives are appointed as substitutes.

More detailed information is available in the ‘Participation rules’.
