Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) offers research training of a high international standard in a strong research environment.  A doctorate in Life Sciences & Medicine from the VUB qualifies candidates for an academic career as well as other professions requiring a high level of competence. This can be reached through courses and workshops made freely available by the doctoral schools to PhD candidates of the VUB.  Your doctoral school in Life Sciences & Medicine (LSM) supports you during your doctorate with training, travel grants and publishing grants. All information about this support can be found on the main webpage of the VUB doctoral schools. This LSM page will keep you updated on upcoming events such as workshops, conferences, or other academic activities that could be of interest to a PhD candidate in Life Science and Medicine.

Pleace check out the social network tab for more information about PhD United, a group of motivated PhD candidates working at the VUB campus in Jette that organizes social events but also the yearly Jette PhD day. The same tab will give you more info about Bionitiative, a group of PhD candidates and Science Professionals passionate about Life Sciences and continuous education, that organizes after work events to bridge the gap between academia and the life science industry.

Even though the VUB offers a wide range of workshops and events, we are also involved in the organisation of interuniversity events and workshops. Keep an eye on events organized by f-Tales, the Flanders Training Network Life Sciences, a joint training initiative of the 5 Flemish universities that offers top class workshops open and free to doctoral (and postdoctoral) researchers. Or check out the Flanders Training Network for Methodology and Statistics (FLAMES), another interuniversity training network with a focus on statistics and methodology.

If you believe that you need a specific training or workshop in Jette, please feel free to contact me at lsm@vub.ac.be and perhaps we can make it happen.

I wish you succes and good luck with your doctoral studies and do not forget to enjoy your time at the VUB.

    Yours sincerely,

    Prof. dr. Leo van Grunsven

Director of the Doctoral School of Life Sciences & Medicine

    PhD United

    Why PhD United?

Current PhD candidates feel that there is a lack of communication between PhD candidates outside their lab (both national and international students).
At our medical campus, a high diversity of doctorates can be achieved (Medical sciences, Pharmaceutical sciences, Human ecology, Health sciences, etc.); which makes our campus rather differentiated. With PhD United, we would like to make the difference!

    What is PhD United?

PhD United is a group of PhD candidates at the VUB (medical campus), who will organize both academic and social activities to get all researchers (PhD and Postdocs) closer together.
PhD United would like to give new PhD candidates and Postdocs a 'welcome home' feeling at our campus. Moreover, we would like to offer a platform where networking can start at campus level.
The ultimate goal of PhD United is to make the life as a PhD candidate easier, no matter whether it comes to working environment or social life!

    External Training

In addition to the wide array of training opportunities in soft skills offered by the central PhD office and DS_LSM, we also refer to external training offers that are available in Flanders. We do advert these in our newsletters, but feel free to check out their websites and look whether these organisations have events or workshops that are of interest to you. Please be aware that although most events and workshops are offered for free to doctoral candidates, some events or workshops do charge fees.
