    How can I take exams without the right laptop or internet access?

    If you do not have the necessary ICT infrastructure (laptop with webcam and microphone), contact the social legal and financial support services in good time. They'll help you find a solution. You will find more information about the application process in this news item on our student website.

    For students who do not have internet access at home, we are trying to make use of solutions including the temporary offer of Proximus and Telenet. They provide free login codes with which students can connect to the wifi network of their neighbours, for example. Students who wish to make use of this should notify studentenstatuut.studiefinanciering@vub.be.

    What technical requirements does my laptop need?

    For all exams organised remotely (oral and written), you'll need a webcam. This can be a built-in one or you can use an external webcam.

    We advise you to make sure your operating system is up-to-date. This is important for the operation of the software and for security of your laptop or desktop. Make sure your webbrowser is also up-to-date.

    Students who need to take a written exam with Respondus LockDown Browser will get information from their teachers. To be able to install the LockDown Browser, your computer’s operating system should meet the following minimum technical requirements:

    • Windows: 10, 8, 7

    • Windows: at least 2 GB RAM

    • Mac: at least 512 MB RAM

    • MAC OSX 10.11 El Capitan or later;

    • Linux ready for installation of DEB of RPM;

    For examens taken via Canvas (without LockDown Browser):

    • Windows 7 and newer

    • Mac OSX 10.10 and newer

    • Linux - chromeOS

    • More information here.

    • Android apps require version 5.0 or newer and iOS apps require version 12 or newer. All Android and iOS devices support the two most recent versions of their respective operating systems.

    When using the meeting tool in Canvas (BigBlueButton):

    • Desktop/Laptop: Chrome, Firefox or Edge (latest versions)

    • Mobile iOS (12.2+): Safari Mobile

    • Mobile Android (6.0+): Chrome Mobile

    • Screen sharing is not supported on mobile devices. If you need to present or show something during the exam, you can't use a mobile device.

    What if the software requires payment or isn't downloadable or available in my country?

    In that case, you should contact the ICT Service Desk (helpdesk@vub.be). The IRMO staff can also help you with specific questions. Contact them via international.relations@vub.ac.be. In some cases, installing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can be a way to access blocked sites or applications.
