IMPORTANT: New Legislation for Extension ID cards!!

In the Belgian legislation, the extension procedure for students who have their residency based on studies, has been changed substantially compared to previous years.

As of now you are obliged to initiate the extension procedure of your Belgian ID card at the latest 15 days before the expiration date. This is the most significant change!

Therefore we advise you to obtain the below list of documents as much in advance as possible and present yourself at your local town hall administration asap.

At the town hall you will have to present the following documents:

    • Current ID card (+ in some communes a valid national passport with visa for Belgium)
    • A registration certificate for the academic year 2019-2020 of the VUB.
Please enrol immediately after receiving the re-enrolment email. You need to be enrolled for 2019-2020 before the student administration can issue a registration certificate.
    • Certificate health insurance (Partena Insurance officer available on Monday and Friday at IRMO, Pleinlaan 5)
    • Proof of solvency: Either a scholarship attestation, garantor certificate or a blocked account certificate
    • Transcript of records or proof of participation in all exams of your programme (via selfservice online or your faculty)
    • Provide proof that you have obtained sufficient study progress in your previous academic year. Please make an appointment via this link to pick up your standard form study progress.
    • Rent contract of your accommodation in Belgium

If you cannot provide these documents before the above mentioned deadline (15 days prior to the expiry date of your Belgian ID card), the town administration has the right to refuse the extension of your ID card!

This implies that you can no longer stay in Belgium and therefore will not be able to finish your studies.
