    Getting things done with others

    Monday, 20 May, 2019 - 13:30 to Monday, 20 May, 2019 - 16:30
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus
    Building D
    room D1.08
    Training

This practical, case-based program consists of 1 training day + ½ training day + ½ training day, hence totaling 2 training days.

The last ½ day ‘content-and-connect’ session is also open to participants who have not followed the first part of the program. This last session is even more case-based and is subject to some specific invitations, cfr. description below.

The whole program is about getting things done from others and achieving your goals by conducting ‘positive politics’.

Instead of having aggressive meetings, or avoiding a  discussion, you will benefit by learning how to build positive coalitions with the right people in the best possible way.

You will gain insights in both your own preferred behaviour and in the preferred interaction style of others. This will allow you to customize your interactions and hence get more frequently what you want from your internal or external partnerships.

Finally, a lot of attention goes to how to conduct crucial conversations, for instance by giving and receiving positive and critical feedback.

These are the 3 building blocks of the program:

    1) BUILDING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS (= DAY 1)

    2) CUSTOMIZING YOUR INTERACTION WITH OTHERS (= ½ DAY )

    3) CONTENT-AND-CONNECT SESSION (= ½ DAY 3)

    1) BUILDING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS (= 1 DAY)

    * Case discussions: building practical solutions for concrete cases from participants in an interactive way
    * Desired change: what is your goal, what are your interests? And what do others want to achieve?
    * Positive politics: creating manipulative conspiracies or ethical coalitions?

    * Stakeholder mapping: ‘who is who’ in your internal and external partnerships

    * Interacting with internal or external parties: building your coalition plan
    * Intention and effect: how to level the intention of your communication with the effect you have on coalition partners

    * A conscious choice: designing win-win instead of win-loose conversations

    2) CUSTOMIZING YOUR INTERACTION WITH OTHERS (= ½ DAY)

    * Case discussions: building practical solutions for concrete cases from participants in an interactive way

    * Raising self-awareness: what is my preferred interaction style? And how do others prefer to interact with you?

    * Adopting style flexibility: how can I adjust my interaction style to coalition partners without playing games

    * Crucial conversations (1): when emotion kicks in, we’re seldom at our best

    * Crucial conversations (2): the art of giving and receiving feedback
    * Concrete steps forward in coalition building: don’t change more than needed

    3) CONTENT AND CONNECT SESSION (= ½ DAY )

Professional learning networks at VUB are designed to both connect with practical knowledge (‘what') and with people ('who’). Whilst improving your professional skills is essential, in a networked organisation like VUB we also want to focus on building stronger connections between all people.

During these highly interactive 1/2 day ‘content-and-connect’ session you can bring in minimum 1 case that you would like to have input from by the other learners and networkers and by the facilitator.

Participating to a content-and-connect session with very curious, open-minded ears is crucial for its success.

By interactively working on specific cases and challenges participants bring in, your VUB network will grow and get stronger.

Trust and confidentiality are guaranteed by you and the other participants at a VUB content-and-connect session.

Finally, a good balance between giving and receiving are key during and after the sessions.

After a content-and-connect session you will:

    - have concrete options to take the next step towards a solution for a concrete case

    - get tools and options to experiment with as of the next day

    - obtain a wider access to existing and new VUB networks

    - have learned something about networking itself
