    Friday, 13 September, 2019 - 14:00
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus
    Campus Etterbeek
    DSh seminar

On the 12th and the 13th of September, the VUB will host award-winning American sociologist John Levi Martin (U of. Chicago). Apart from presenting and discussing his research, Prof. Martin has kindly agreed to host a Phd-workshop on the basis of his latest book "Thinking Through Methods"

(https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/T/bo25227312.html), which is an insightful guide for researchers at the beginning of their academic career.

More specifically, this event would consist of a 3-hour workshop in which a max. of 12 Phd-students will receive specific feedback and "tips and tricks"

on problems that they face in the various phases of their study. To this end, participants are asked to provide us with a 1-page-summary of ONE specific and concrete problem they face in your current doctoral work, regardless of the stage.. Martin will review these problems in advance and then provide some pointed feedback - individual and collective - during the workshop. This summary  needs to be sent to lowlandsbrussels@gmail.com by no later than the 1st of August. Students who want to participate in this session are also required to read “Thinking Through Methods”. The workshop is designed for a maximum of 12 Phd-students in order to ensure qualitative feedback. If more participants should apply, we will make a selection on the basis of the 1-page-summaries submitted to the organizers.

DSh-Phd-students that are interested can also attend the panel sessions in the morning, which will also feature presentations and discussion by Phd-candidates. Please contact lowlandsbrussels@gmail.com to register for this.
