Nilüfer Göle is professor of sociology and director at CESPRA at EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France). Her research focuses on Islam, public space, gender, secularism and multiple modernities. Her work examines how Islam becomes visible in European public spaces and engenders controversies concerning moral, cultural and religious differences. Her approach introduces non-Western perspectives and engages critically with the universalist dimension of secular modernity. Recently, she published the books The Daily Lives of Muslims: Islam and Public Confrontation in Contemporary Europe (2017) and Islam and Secularity: The Future of Europe's Public Sphere (2015).

This masterclass invites PhD-researchers with interests in studying dynamics of gender, religion and secularism in Western public spaces in disciplines like sociology, urban studies, gender studies, anthropology, social geography or philosophy. Participants can receive feedback and comments on their research, and are invited to formulate specific questions for input in the development of their theoretical framework, concepts and research methodology.

To prepare for the masterclass, the participants will be invited to familiarize themselves with the work of prof. Göle by reading 1 of her recent articles. Participants are also asked to prepare a concise presentation, to present it during the masterclass (max. 10 minutes) and to formulate some concrete questions for input and feedback.
