DSh - ‘Communicating, the path to a healthy and happy work-relationship with your PhD supervisor’

    Monday, 21 October, 2019 - 13:00
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus

    Abstract

‘Communicating, the path to a healthy and happy work-relationship with your PhD supervisor

This hands-on workshop aims to expand your communications skillset in order to get the most out of your relationship with your PhD supervisor(s). This workshop will discuss tips and tricks on how to communicate better in general (e.g., active listening, perspective taking, personal conflict style), how to deal with (negative) feedback from your supervisor, and how to give feedback toward your supervisor. This workshop is infused with both individual and group exercises (e.g., roleplay) to encourage you to practice receiving/giving feedback and increase confidence in your own skillset. Furthermore, we will discuss real-life examples of communication hardships during your own PhDs and discuss how you can tackle these problems.

The PhD candidates have to send at least one personal example of a communication problem they have with their supervisor one week before the workshop (Nanouk.verhulst@vub.be). These personal examples will be used anonymously during the workshop for exercises and discussions.
