    Introduction.

Research projects involving live, non-human, vertebrate animals, performed on- or off-campus by students or staff of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), must receive ethical clearance. Therefore, a project application needs to be submitted to the Ethical Committee for Laboratory Animals (Dutch translation: Ethische Commissie Dierproeven [ECD]) of the VUB.

The ECD only approves research projects on animals for which no alternatives are available. Furthermore research projects need to (i) comply with the legislation (laboratory license, researcher license, etc), (ii) take in account the 3R rule (reduction, refinement, replacement), (iii) avoid duplication of previously conducted research, and (iv) have scientific merit.

While most projects fulfill the requirements above, they need two or more rounds of evaluation by the ECD because of incorrect completion of the application form (including the non-technical summary). This workshop is purposed to provide you with guidelines on how to complete your application and as such avoid repeated submission, hence delaying your research!
