After enrolment on campus register your courses!

As soon as your enrolment is fully completed, you can start the course registration.

Start your course registration timely, especially if you still want advice from your learning path counselor.

    Deadlines for course registration

    • for 1st semester and year courses: 15 October 2017
    • for 2nd semester courses: 28 February 2018

After these deadlines you will need the explicit permission of your faculty dean. At some faculties you request this permission with an online form, at other faculties you must contact the learning path counselor. Check below to see what applies to your faculty.

If you are likely to miss the deadline due to a technical malfunction, do log in time your issue per email.

After the deadline only with permission of the dean

After the deadline, the dean decides if you can make changes to your programme, so whether or not you can still add or cancel courses.

Carefully follow the procedure of your faculty for your exception request.

How to request the consent of the dean

How to request the permission of the dean in order to change your programme, varies per faculty. You can find an overview below.

Do you need to register your courses yourself?

Students are required to register their own courses to be able to participate in the exams. Most students are responsible for registering themselves, although there are a few lucky exceptions.

Only your study programme in the Student SelfService is official. Make sure that it is correct. Synchronization with learning platform Pointcarré occurs automatically.

    How to register courses?

The course registration consists of ten steps. Click on a step to see the explanation with screenshot (s).

Do you get an error while registering your courses?

Often there is a very logical reason why the system does not allow you to register a certain course.

Only through your learning path counselor can you request an exception for the built-in parameters of the study programme.

Pre- and co-requisites: the set up of a study programme

The system will automatically hold you from registering more than 66 credits. A full-time programme is already 60 credits, and only through your learning path counselor you can ask to take up more credits.

In addition, a study programme is structured according to a certain logic, with 'pre- and co-requisites'. Some courses can only be registered if you simultaneously take up other courses too, or if you have already completed others successfully. Do read carefully the error message to understand why the Student SelfService automatically prevents you from registering a certain course.

If you should be able to register a particular course, and the system still does not allow you to do so, then there is a possible technical error in the system.

How to apply for exemptions and what about registering the courses concerned?

You can apply for an exemption for a course if you obtained a credit certificate for a course with identical or similar content. The exemptions of course need to be incorporated in your study programme.

Attention! For some faculties you must register the course for which you applied for an exemption. At other faculties that is not the case. Check the bottom of this page to see what applies to your faculty.

How to apply for an exemption?

You can apply for an exemption for a course on the basis of Previously Acquired Qualifications (PAQs) if you obtained a credit certificate for a course with identical or similar content (either at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel or not).

At certain faculties exemptions can be applied for at both the beginning of the first and the second semester. At other faculties you can only submit one exemption file, per programme, per academic year. Take a good look at the rules that apply to your faculty to prevent disappointments.

You will find the procedures and the exemption request forms at your faculty website. The form always indicates the deadlines and the place where you have to submit the form.

    The impact of course registration

What impact does the registration of courses have on your learning account, study effiency and child benefit and scholarship?

    Learning account

The number of credits that you register for is deducted from your available learning account when enrolling in a initial bachelor’s or initial master’s programme or credit contract in Flanders.

    Study effiency

As a student of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel we expect you to obtain credits for at least 60% of the credits taken up each academic year.

In case you do not meet these regulations, the examiners meeting will impose you with binding conditions at the end of the academic year or will refuse your re-enrolment in the same programme.  If your study efficiency doesn’t live up to the binding conditions, the examination board will refuse your re-enrolment in the same programme.

    Child benefit and scholarship

Do check with your local authority for child benefits and scholarships to know the requirements in order to be and remain eligible for child benefit and scholarships.
